Abstract:
These data cover the Belt-Stockett-Sand Coulee area southeast of Great Falls, Montana. The data include coal mine maps, geology, land use, soils, ownership, and 1:24,000 scale topographic base map data for the region. The mine data were scanned from various historic mine tunnel diagrams and then registered to section corners to bring the data approximately into a real-world coordinate system. The ownership data are registered to an idealized public land survey grid and cannot be used for mapping -- rather a display of the ownership data can be used in conjunction with a map showing public land survey lines to determine ownership of areas on the map. The 1:24,000 scale topographic data include roads, hydrography, railroads, public land survey lines, and 20-foot contour lines. The topographic maps digitized were published in 1982 and 1991. Geology was obtained from three separate maps that were made by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in 1989. Land use was interpreted from aerial photographs of 1995 and field observations made in 1995. Soils were digitized from the 1982 Natural Resource Conservation Service soil survey of Cascace County.
Purpose:
These data were produced to support mine reclamation efforts of the Reclamation Division of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.

Data set credit:
The datasets were assembled between 1994 and 1999 by Kris Larson, Kristina Gurrieri, and Dave Highness at the Montana State Library. The land use data was produced by Mike Cannon of the Helena Office of the U.S. Geological Survey. Soil maps were provided by Joe Little of the Natural Resources Conservation Service office in Great Falls. Land owner parcels and public land survey lines were assembled by Ken Wall of Geodata Services Inc., Missoula. Stuart Blundell of Integrated Geoscience of Helena and Rebecca Renz of SMD Engineering in Helena scanned and vectorized various 7.5 minute quadrangles, historic mine maps, geology maps, and soil maps for the Library. The project was overseen by John Koerth of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), and Loretta Reichert of DEQ provided technical assistance.
